There are dozens of accessories that you need to acquire when expecting, including diaper bags, bottles, cribs, blankets, pacifiers, clothes, and much much more. With so many little essential items to purchase, it is easy to forget one item that is crucial to your comfort, and to your baby's health: A baby changing mat.

Baby changing mats are the surfaces on which a baby is placed, in order to change its soiled diapers. Although available in multiple styles and designs, the basic function of changing mats for babies is to provide a clean, comfortable surface that supports the sensitive bare skin of a baby's bottom.

At home, you will likely have a changing table system, where the diapers and other changing accessories, such as wipes, are readily available. When you are out for the day however, it is unlikely that you will have such a situation, and you should always be aware of changing your baby's diaper in a public changing space.

Ideally, when the need arises to change a dirty diaper outside of the home, you would have a baby change mat tucked into your diaper bag, along with everything else that you would carry while out and about with your child. With your own change mat, you do not have to worry about placing your child's bare behind on a surface that is cold, uncomfortable, or worse, unclean.

Portable changing mats for babies are a common accessory, and are therefore quite easy to find. They should tuck neatly into your diaper and accessories bag, and then unfold when needed, to cover the length of your baby's body. These types of mats are most often available in folding and rolling varieties. The former will lie flat when folded, and the latter is simialar to yoga mat, albeit much smaller, and likely more comfortable. There are also changing mats that only fold up once, and that have handles attached, so that they can be carried like briefcases or handbags.

When choosing the most appropriate material for your baby change mat, consider the following conditions: Does your baby frequently have accidents or leaks in the process of changing their diaper? Is your baby's skin sensitive to certain types of materials or fabrics? In the former case, consider using a change mat that has a water resistant cover, to facilitate clean up, should a spill or accident occur. In the case of the latter, look for a soft material that is easy on all skin types, and check double check that that material does not contain any irritants or dyes that may aggravate your baby's sensitivity.
